vaginal dryness: what causes it and why you should treat it.
Vaginal dryness is the most common symptom of the Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM). Simply put, this refers to the thinning, drying and inflammation of the vaginal walls, and the complications that can occur as a result.
The most common cause is menopause, although other causes include breastfeeding, treatments for certain conditions like cancer and diabetes, and some medications.
What causes vaginal dryness
Estrogen is a highly lubricating hormone. When estrogen levels decline, skin everywhere starts thinning and drying—including the vagina. Unfortunately, this typically gets worse as we age.
A drop in estrogen
In addition to causing discomfort during sex, vaginal dryness also causes the pH of the vagina to rise. When the pH changes, so do the types of bacteria that live in the vagina. Most importantly, higher pH causes the lactobacillus (the good bacteria that help keep the biome balanced) to die.
